The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World by Antony Loewenstein

4.0

This is a powerful message and indictment of the arms industry and the title is a bit misleading. This book is about Israel's role in the arms/war/surveillance industry. It is frankly extremely depressing reading because the war industry is alive, thriving, and getting worse.

I applaud the author in writing this book because just reading about the huge numbers of people being killed, tortured, and dehumanized in the name of power is so depressing. The content is chilling. Israel has numerous close economic, military and political ties with despots who use violence against their own people.

My biggest takeaways are that the moral reasons never matters to world powers. It's an excuse to hide their true motivations - power. For example, if Israel suddenly condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it's likely because of geopolitics and power plays with Russia, rather than caring at all about human lives lost. The surveillance industry is also booming and growing. It's quite terrifying how the various countries are in a race to develop their own surveillance hacking programmes to track dissidents and minority groups.

The book has a number of grammatical errors though. And it could be organized better. Each chapter is very lengthy and has no subheadings, so it all reads a bit like an infodump.

I highly recommend this book.
