Choker by Elizabeth Woods

5.0

Choker is a stand-alone book written by Elisabeth Woods. It was also her debut novel. It was published back in 2011, although it is not a well-known book. I found about it thanks to Raeleen over padfootandprongs07 on YouTube, as well as Ariel over arielbisset on YouTube. Both of them said they really liked it, hence I thought I should give it a try. Moreover, they were right: it was good it was really good!

Cara is an invisible girl in her high school. She does not have powers but no one really notices her, until one day. While she was having lunch at the cafeteria she almost chokes herself. She was saved by Ethan, “the boy”. Ever since that moment people, especially the group led by Ethan’s girlfriend, Alexis, start calling her choker.
A cause of this she starts having a really hard time, and she could really use a friend. Therefore, Zoe appears. Zoe was Cara's best friend in the place Cara used to live; they were inseparable. Zoe is now there because she had had trouble in her house, hence she asks Cara to stay at her place while she sorts things out. Cara accepts.
Next morning, Cara’s neighbor, who is one of Alexis’ best friend, is founded dead at the pool. Her friends and her were having a little party and it seems she got drunk, fell into the pool and drown. However, the police think it might not have been an accident.
After Sydney’s death, Zoe convinces Cara to change a bit, and go for Ethan. Therefore she does, although Alexis is still in the middle. If she disappeared everything will be perfect in Cara’s life. She will have everything she has ever wanted: a hot boyfriend and her best friend nearby.
However, sometimes is better not to wish too much, because you can end up getting it.

Choker was a nail-biting, really interesting type of book. The story develops really fast, but slow enough to keep the suspense. Despite the fact the ending was one of the two existent predictable options. Apart from that, the book was amazing.
Also, in my personal opinion, I think the book takes an interesting turn on the theme of bullying; the whole point of how things can turn out for a person who has suffered from bulling, it is not a usual aspect to be considered.
Apart from that, the epilogue gave a creepy tone to the end. It reminded me of the endings from Pretty Little Liars TV series episodes.

To sum up, Choker was an overall fantastic book, which trapped me from cover to cover. It was even better than I was expected. And because of that I think more people should read it. It is not a book in the hype but it is a really good book.
