Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty by Esther Duflo, Abhijit V. Banerjee

informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

My family was among the many struck by the Asian economic crisis in the 1980s. Having lived less than $1 a day growing up, this book speaks to me.  The authors did an awesome job articulating how it is to live poor "in all its complexity and richness". The decision making is different, the form of insurance is different, having a network is different. Most people don't realise they make assumptions about the poor based on their own coloured view. Is there a poverty trap? How do people get out? Does aid help the poor or make their situation worse because of corruption? Why do some people who don't have enough money for food have a TV and a mobile phone? There's no universal grand answer so every experiment they made sheds serious light on these debates.

So many juicy questions and insightful answers.
Authors were recently awarded the Nobel Prize. Well deserved.
