Study for Obedience
by Sarah Bernstein
I can appreciate that there is literary merit in the (exceedingly) meticulous prose and there are some interesting things that can be unpacked from the narrator’s acute observations of the human race (“…we grant those close to us an enduring state of exception…” was a fun one to chew on). That being said, I found every second spent reading this book to be painfully tedious. There is no real plot. Instead, the reader finds themselves wandering through the philosophical and frankly indulgent navel gazing of the troubled narrator which is both frustrating and exhausting as the reader.
