I realized that three stars for a Vorkosigan is like a B- in grad school. But, I'm not sure I can go higher than that.
It was still Pretty Good, don't get me wrong. It was a one off, on some new-to-the-universe planet (c'mon, guys, let's do one on Sergyar!). Am glad we're off Barrayar - the kid stuff is kind of getting tiresome. I mean, I'm glad he's developed and lived long enough - not enough SF characters even get families, and getting to have adventures afterwards is laudable - but, I like that it's backgrounded in this one.
Anyway, as it was a one-off they got to do a lot of fun-but-not-relevant-to-much things. Which was fine, but...I dunno, not as fun as some have been.
Am glad we got a bit of Vorkosigan family stuff - after all these books (after all this time!) I am emotionally involved with the family. (Yes, I cried at That One Part. And then I went back and reread that bit to see if it came down the way that it had been predicted in whatever book, (it was) and cried again.)
Otherwise, I never have gotten the Kareen/Mark pairing; nothing in here makes me change that questioning. More Ivan, please!
