The Blueprint by S.E. Harmon
3.0

I'm honestly a bit torn on how to rate this. On the one hand, I loved loved loved the two main characters. Kelly is just my favorite kind of character. Super spunky, lots of snark, loves Star Wars and Superheroes. And Blue was really super great, too. Super sweet, super devoted to his friend.

I really loved the guys and loved their friendship, but 'gay for you' type stories are always tricky, and I'm not sure if I really believed in this relationship by the end. I think there's a difference between a character discovering their bisexuality and then wanting to get in a relationship with a same-sex friend and a character wanting to hold on to a friendship by pushing themselves to do things just to make the other person happy. I feel like Blue fell more into the latter category, unfortunately.

I think having more than one 'I need to get drunk to relax enough to do stuff' encounters made it seem like Blue really wasn't ready. There was also way too many instances where Blue seemed to up his interest in Kelly just because he was jealous. It ended up feeling a bit more like Blue just wanted to have a relationship with Kelly so no one would take his best friend away. I also think he seemed really reluctant in the sexual encounter where Kelly made him bottom. It seemed more like an ultimatum than completely consentual. I was a bit disappointed that Kelly went through with it, honestly. He could see how nervous Blue was, and Blue even asked him to stop doing some things and just get it over with, and Kelly kind of brushed off his nervousness. I think it was clear Blue wasn't ready, and it really affected how I felt about Kelly and this relationship in the last part of the book.

Overall, I'd say the writing and friendship were really well done, but I wasn't totally convinced that the romantic relationship was solid. Not sure if I'll read the second book or not.
