Supernova Era by Cixin Liu
3.0

Let me begin my review by saying that I really strongly dislike "The Lord of the Flies", so I was skeptical of this book. I decided to give it a chance because 1) I enjoy lighter post-Apocalyptic books (think Station Eleven, not I Am Legend) and 2) I've heard great things about Liu's other works.

I thought the concept itself was interesting-- a supernova causes radiation that will kill everyone over age 13 or so, but they have about a year before they'll die. How will they leave the world for their children, and how will the children act after the adults are gone?

From a storytelling perspective, I liked the approach of writing as a historian after the fact. Some may think that removes suspense, but I liked the perspective it gave. I also appreciated reading about how the adults and children would both react. (However, I think there's an entire missing story here about the teenagers over 13-ish and how teens/young adults would have reacted.) Bottom line-- I feel like the book starts off really strong and intriguing but then goes downhill as it goes on. I'm glad I read it, and will add Liu's other books to my TBR pile, but I didn't really leave the book feeling satisfied with the plot.
