Keeping in mind this is a hi-lo book, I still don't think it's a great example of the form. The heroine Kai comes off as pretty daft from the melodramatic plot which contradicts her being otherwise portrayed as strong and intelligent and bad-ass with her motorcycle. I am also unsure about the white saviour role (I think) that the older couple from the hostel play at the end of the book when they say they're gonna adopt her and make sure she stays in touch with her "First Nations roots". I also would have liked to see her Navajo and Stoney Nakoda identities have more depth. I think Richard Wagamese's HIM STANDING is a better example of an Indigenous hi-lo book.
