The Picture of Dorian Gray
by Oscar Wilde
dark
mysterious
tense
fast-paced
I've noticed Oscar Wilde loves using "that is all" in his works. That phrase is all over this book as well as in The Importance Of Being Earnest.
Reading Dorian Gray feels like walking into a perfume shop where someone has sprayed a few too many fragrances. The prose and imagery is elaborately beautiful to the point where it's nauseating. It's heady and intoxicating, packed to the brim with luxurious imagery, with some very funny epigrammatical dialogue peppered in as well.
While I do love the descriptions in this book, I think character dialogue is where Wilde excels the most. Each character has such a distinct perspective that I didn't really need dialogue tags to know who was talking. I liked how fast paced the speech was as well. You do really get the sense of quick, witty repartee between the characters when they speak.
