In the fourth installement of Lucinda Riley’s The Seven Sisters, we get to explore CeCe’s story. Each sister gets a hint about their origin, taking CeCe on a journey to Australia, one of few countries she has refused to go to during her and Star’s many travels.
CeCe is Pa Salt’s 27 year old fourth adoptive daughter. She’s been dependent on her sister Star her entire life, and because of this she comes off as more naive and immature than you would expect a grown woman to be. Or it could be that Lucinda Riley is just better at writing characters from the past, than the ones set in modern day. I had the same experience with the previous book about Star: She was portraited as an extremely immature person, with the emotional range and life experience you would see in a teenager.
Is the key to who CeCe is in Australia? Her first encounter «down under» is the charismathic and energetic Chrissy, and the two of them set out to discover the mystery of CeCe.
I really enjoyed The Pearl Sister. I do find that the book could have been a bit shorter, there are some details and dialogues that seems like they’re just there to fill in a gap that’s not necessarily there. It’s so close to be a five star read but because of knitpicking, it just comes a bit short. As I mentioned, both in this book and the previous one, it’s a pattern of Riley not really knowing how to write modern adult women. At the same time she’s a master of holding multiple threads of the story simultaniously, and weaving them all together into a strong plot. The level of research she has to put in before every book is amazing.
I recommend The Pearl Sister for readers who enjoy mystery, drama, love, historical fiction, and history.
