Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

dark emotional inspiring reflective sad medium-paced

3.5

I really enjoyed the art and the honesty of the author's personal, complicated relationship with her family.

Like others here, it felt to me very English major-y. Some called it pretentious with all the literary references and effusive vocabulary. I don't know that I'd use the word pretentious but it felt out of my league at times.

I'm also bothered by the fact that at no point did the author directly confront the fact that her father was preying on minors. The story focuses on him more as a tragic repressed queer man. This is such a common issue within queer stories in general and I was disappointed by its presence here.
