A Wilderness of Stars by Shea Ernshaw

2.0

Can't do it anymore. Between the way too long chapters (50 pages is ridiculous) combined with the repetitive language (if I have to read 'my/her/his/their eyes clicked' one more time, I was gonna lose it), meandering pace, and way too vague plot, I've had it.

I don't mind slow burns, don't even mind when the plot is left up in the air a bit but this book wouldn't let you know ANYTHING until the very end and even then it's such a 'wtf'. Yes, I gave up and skipped to the end and I'm not exaggerating when I say you don't learn anything until the last bit of this book.

And when the twist hit, it was so stupid I couldn't even be mad, I just sighed and felt tired. Turns out they're not even on Earth and YET, they see the constellations as we do, have the exact same flora and fauna as us, and their world is stuck in an Old West setting. Nothing makes sense here. The astronomy throughout the book is wrong, the fact the Architect and Astronomer didn't just stay with the crashed ship makes no sense, the fact they hoarded information is mind-boggling. Just all a big mess.

The romance was...lmao. Holy piss poor. Didn't care. The characters were one-dimensional and whilst I get that Vega lived her whole life in the valley, her ignorance and lack of self-preservation really pissed me off.

I adored Shea Ernshaw's The Wicked Deep and liked Winterwood but this was such a miss imo. Still looking forward to what she does next but oof, hope she goes back to do more like The Wicked Deep and less this.

Two stars because her prose is nice as always.
