I read this because I am a huge fan of Sci-fi and I heard great things about this piece. I will admit that I was surprised by the first half of this book, and not for a good reason. Though I loved the format that was chosen for the story telling, the actual sci-fi aspect of this book was just a slapped together compilation of other sci-fi books, movies, and TV shows that I've already seen. I was so disappointed! This was like reading Battlestar Galactica meets Firefly, with a Stargate and some of the characters from Digital Fortress...
I gave this 3 stars because the storytelling was done beautifully, and once I got past that unoriginal first half, the story became exciting and more unpredictable. It was great towards the end so I will give book 2 a shot. I think it would be a great book for someone first getting into the sci-fi genre, but not necessarily for someone like me.
