Tidesong by Wendy Xu
3.0

Perfect for fans of Studio Ghibli and The Tea Dragon Society, this is a magically heartwarming graphic novel about self-acceptance and friendship.

Sophie is sent away to practice her magic and train for the Academy, but her cousin and her aunt seem more interested in giving her chores than teaching her magic. When Sophie attempts to practice on her own she accidentally gets entangled with a water dragon who becomes trapped in human form.

The graphics are super cute. Very Studio Ghibli style. I really liked Sophie and Lir, but the adults were rude and mean. Even once more is revealed about the story and the characters I still thought they were unnecessarily mean. I mean could we not get one nice adult at all? The main drawback is the story didn’t flow very well. It felt like a Webtoon in a way. In the author’s note Xu spoke of the importance of the fictional ecological backbone for the world of Tidesong, and honestly this story felt so far removed from that.
