Despite being Vietnamese-American, I never read a story before that tackled the issues within the Asian community so poignantly before. A few essays, short books that touched on the subject, even some video documentaries, etc. but never a book. Not like this one.
The visceral pain and anger I felt reading this gripped me. I felt like crying every single chapter. The author does an incredible job exploring Asian Hate, racism, systematic racism, depression, and Asian-Black solidarity.
The author took the asian shared history in America and wrote a book that expressed our pain and experiences in a beautiful collection of chapters and poems.
In 2020 I feared that one day I’d wake up to find my grandparents or my parents beaten to death on the streets. In 2024 I read a book that expressed my fear in grief in a way I never could. I couldn’t explain to my friends why I was always so angry, why I became so jaded, why I started to hate existing in my own country.
Now I can.
