The Summer Book
by Tove Jansson
i think i was expecting to be more charmed than i was. the most interesting detail, that the mother had died recently, places the chapters in a different context… but ultimately i wasn’t as moved as i thought i would’ve been. instead of the grief feeling like a looming presence, i felt very disconnected from it, and therefore unable to feel much of a bond to either of the characters. the included drawings were cute but i wish there more of them throughout
