Countdown City by Ben H. Winters

5.0

The second entry in the the Last Policeman trilogy by Ben H. Winters, Countdown City is (like The Last Policeman before it) a riveting mystery story, set against the backdrop of the imminent end of the world. This time, former Detective Henry Palace is tasked with finding the missing husband of a childhood friend - a difficult enough task, but compounding the difficulty is the fact that society is crumbling around him as the giant asteroid known as Maia hurtles toward earth. Don't worry if you don't care for science fiction - this is first and foremost a mystery. But if you are a science fiction fan who does not generally like detective stories, give The Last Policeman series (The Last Policeman, Countdown City and World of Trouble) a try. The plot moves fast, with just enough twisting to keep you guessing. Everything comes together in the end, but in a way that was totally unexpected for me - I could not see the end coming scores of pages away, which is nice.
