The Corrections
by Jonathan Franzen
To me, Franzen's writing style had an agreeable and oddly soothing quality throughout this book, and his familiar, utterly believable (though thoroughly unlikeable) characters made for a compelling, at times blissfully aggravating read. The problem is the large chunks of this book that were merely bland and irritating, the literary equivalent of having to get through an excess of dry, flavourless pastry on a fruit pie to get to the deliciously rewarding centre. Maybe my post-read cynicism has exaggerated the size of these chunks of mediocrity, but oh well, three stars it is. A masterpiece? Not to me. An amazing experience? Not quite. A good book? Probably.
