Is this one of the best novellas I’ve ever read? Yeah, probably. It follows Melinoë and Helios in the same timeline as The Queen and The King and can be tandem read or on its own.
I have been in love with Mellie since we met her weirdo (affectionately) ass in book one. She is the ultimate dark and twisty goddess with notes of stabby. The way she refuses to admit she’s down bad for Helios gets me every time. Her character has oodles (she’d slap me for using that word) of depth and I loved getting to know her on a deeper level. Mellie’s quick wit is one of my favorite things about her and I need to take notes on insults from this queen.
Helios was always a vibe, but somewhat elusive until now. He is *also* down bad but unlike Mellie, refuses to stfu about it. I love a man obsessed! You know how someone might say, “she could stab me and I’d say thank you?” That’s Helios. He lives for the cat and mouse, and KNOWS she cares about him, but knows when to stop pushing. The way he always pulls her out of the dark made me sob.
10/10, no notes, perfection. Please read trigger warnings bc Mellie is a dark queen and has some unique um bedroom habits.
