The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty

5.0

It’s a difficult thing to impress me with a sequel, but KINGDOM OF COPPER might have stolen the prize as my favorite second book to date. WHAT A BOOK! Every element that I enjoyed in CITY OF BRASS—the beautiful writing, the complex magic, the intricate politics, the addicting relationships—were back, but magnified. Everything in this book just took the entire journey to a whole new level.

After the cliffhanger in City of Brass, I was very happy to have the addition of Dara’s chapters to the Ali and Nahri ones. You may remember that Dara was by far my favorite character in the first book *laughs hysterically* *sweats uncontrollably* That may have changed. Do I still love my brooding Afshin? I absolutely do! But while I enjoyed his chapters (and suffered copiously through them), my attention definitely strayed toward the other characters in this book.

I have a lot of feelings, okay?

The character development I’ve witnessed is something I’m still struggling to articulate into words. While I loved Nahri into City of Brass, the time jump between the two books really sees her mature and grow into the strong, determined woman she was always meant to be. You guessed it, she’s my favorite badass lady now, I can’t even deny it. But I expected that. And I expected that I would love Muntadhir in this book (even though he hurt me) and I was hoping I’d get to see more of Jamshid and fall in love with him too (and I adore him and THE TWISTS *faints*). But was I expecting that Alizayd al Qahtani would become the father of my unborn children and that I would be ready to die for him if need be?

Absolutely not.

And yet it happened! Of all the character developments, his was the one that surprised me the most. Ali is the one who matures the most during this time jump, and not rooting for him was never an option. His storyline breeds all sorts of political drama, angsty relationships, SHIPPING. I can’t. I love him. Goodbye.

I’m aware this review hardly makes sense, but I assume you understood that this book was glorious so that’s my victory. Now I’ll continue dying with EMPIRE OF GOLD (As I write this review, I’m well over 60% done with that one and SOMEBODY SAVE ME).

Just read these books please.
