The Eye of the World
by Robert Jordan
This is a very whelming read. The world building is good, and I am excited to read more, but ultimately this book was very predictable. It seems like the author took a bunch of existing fantasy elements, threw them together, and renamed everything by a few letters (looking at you, Olgier the Ogre-people). I definitely liked the classic nature of the story, however. There are objective bad guys and objective good guys, but it still has some moral grey areas that keep you invested. We got to see the world come to life in this book and while the plot was engaging, it does at time seem like tropes are being thrown at a wall to see what sticks. (We have pirates! And treasure hunting! And tomb raiding! All in the same medieval society!). Even though this book is technically a standalone (i.e no cliffhangar), my recommendation to read/avoid will come after more books in the series are read, as currently this book was both enjoyable but not excellent enough to honestly give my accurate rating. Just a big “eh ok pretty good”.
