Good historical fiction is my favorite way to learn about parts of history I am unfamiliar with. Great historical fiction is my favorite way to understand human experiences that are foreign to me. And this excellent novel does both brilliantly! On top of that, it is delivered with stunning prose and vivid descriptions of the environment (and the food! yum). I was utterly swept off my feet.

Bullet review:
- Lyrical and intimate
- Religious division
- Incredibly immersive
- Centered on Partition
- Important modern history
- Clever and empathetic

I was very ignorant about this portion of modern history and this made me want to dig deeper. With close-up and personal perspectives the events felt more impactful and I was immensely invested in the characters' evolution. A beautiful and harrowing story.
