This book was a master class in what a phenomenal memoir should be! Ms. Tina has LIVED a life!! It was incredible how she weaved history into her life so organically. We got to see the impacts and implications of events that are blurbs in textbooks on real people and families.
What a powerful lineage that was obviously unique, but also echoed the hardships and triumphs of many Black Americans. Reading about her early life, made my own family stories come to the forefront.
Watching Ms. Tina step into her own was so emotional. I felt her anger at the nuns of her elementary school, the joy of stepping into her own in LA, the pain of soothing Uncle Johnny as he slipped away, the irritation of the media spinning lies about her daughters and the liberation of choosing herself!
This book was in so much reverence of her ancestors, the women of her family and the future generations of their legacy.
"People who were not on this earth for even one moment together, yet seem to remain in conversation."
This is the kind of novel that inspires you to dig into your own family and find treasures and connections. It begs you to learn your story from the beginningđź’•
