Mrs Bradshaw's Handbook by Terry Pratchett

2.0

I usually love everything by Terry Pratchett but I just found this a drag, it's written in the style of a travel guide, unfortunately travel guides aren't very fun to read. We get to hear about all the places that the train stops at and there are a few jokes and titbits that liven it up but it's still pretty dull. It's all very similar, for every place that the train stops we get variations on the same information- what the town is like, markets, local attractions, places to eat, hotels and inns (seriously for every hotel we get the number of bedrooms, ensures ect.) and it just gets old very quickly. It's also written in the style of Mrs Bradshaw which appears to be pretty uptight so we don't get the level of humour that Pratchett includes with his usual narration. (turns out it may not have been written by him which explains a lot)

It's a shame because it's beautifully illustrated and the notices from various railway related enterprises included are great (discworld health and safety notices are a wonderful thing to behold). Perhaps if it was more diary and less travel guide it would be more fun.
