So up until about 75-80% this was a 5 star read. Cosy low-fantasy, fake dating/fake engagement, second chance romance. Adorable groveling orc, trying to win over the woman he's been in love with. A little insta love, but still cute.
Then the drama ensued and it was so manufactured, I found it completely unbelievable and just a way to get our characters to break up. I don't think their actions themselves were out of character, but the 'bad gal' quite literally appeared out of thin air to cause upheaval and then disappeared just as quickly. Basically, whatever the opposite of deus ex machina is. Diaboli ex machina?
And then the last 10% magically everything worked out and everyone's prejudices vanished into thin air.
