Enjoyable sequel, though a little slow in some parts. The romance is sweet, although less of it here, and the world set up is interesting enough. It's not high drama like some YA, more of a gentle pace. Divine Rivals was a bit better I think. Highly recommend listening to the audio book - the voice actors are always so so good. This feels like the end of this series, but I will read more Rebecca Ross. Her river enchanted series is great.
My one issue: I did feel like the character of Forest (Iris's brother) was hard done by. He's one of the main mysteries in the first book since he's missing, then he comes back and doesn't really have a good relationship with Iris, shacks up with one of her friends and then dies pointlessly alongside her in an attack. I just felt like his death had no purpose and was a real fizzler. If you took Forrest out of the book, would it matter? I'm sure he represented the pointless deaths of the war or something, but when he was found dead I was just like... oh okay. He really didn't do much in the second book.
My one issue: I did feel like the character of
Moderate: War
Minor: Death
