You Between the Lines by Katie Naymon

4.5

I, like, really cried reading this?
Leigh is truly insufferable but that is also the point. She’s judgmental and snobby in exactly the way she thinks everyone else is, and unfortunately, that was (and sometimes still can be) ME. Like girl, you are not better than them bc you refuse to read Robert Frost. As a writer, you should read everythingggg. Like damn I got so annoyed with her!! But I also saw way too much of myself in her, which is why I simply had to accept defeat.
Will is baby and he will always be baby.
Much of this was so silly but I loved it so much. I’m not a poet but I do love writing poetry, and I know it’s not very good, so this was fun for me! I also applied to grad school a few years ago (Oxford, and I’m 98% sure I didn’t get in because I write like Leigh) and while sometimes I long for the workshop environment, I also hate feeling pressured to write. Pressure myself, sure, but from others? Byeee. Reading this made me sure that I don’t think an MFA is for me lol. But I also loved how corny Leigh was and that, even though she was pretty high horse-y about it, she was unapologetically girly and frilly and pink. Like me!! I hate her bc she’s me and therefore I love her. But I also love her bc she’s me and therefore I hate her. It’s complex.
I stayed up late several nights in a row to read/finish this book. It really got me. I have been reeled in by another hot book!
