REVIEW: Good Girl by Aria Aber
#gifted by @hogarthbooks / Happy pub day! 🎉
Can I just say how much I love novels written by poets??
A debut that felt intimate and gritty. This is a coming of age story about a young Afghan girl named Nila, who experiences shame and embarrassment of her Afghan culture and identity. She’s also dealing with grief, feeling lost, and she turns to the Berlin underground in the early 2000s, which was filled with drugs, techno and art. Nila gets mixed up with an artistic crowd, caught in a toxic relationship, and surrounded by the violence against her people. I wanted to feel a bit more tethered, emotionally to Nila by the end of the novel, she was such a compelling character, but I felt a bit disconnected from her by the end. Truly enjoyed the prose, and cannot wait to read more from this author in the future.
Thank you @hogarthbooks for providing me an early copy in exchange for an honest review!
