Brilliant book, my personal favourite of all time. However, it's not worth reading if you don't like a long book, considering its like 1400 pages.
The Stand is divided up into three main parts. The first third or so of the book is basically just character building and setting the atmosphere for the book. You find out about the plague, and how and why it killed so many, and the random handful of survivors, who lean on eachother in such dark moments.
In the second part, you read about the character's backstories, and how they come together, completely unaware of each other's epic journies, and attempt to build civilisation. There are two main groups of people: the survivors hoping to build a new society and get on with life the best they can, lead by 108 year old Mother Abigail vs the others, some handpicked by Randall flagg (a recurring character and leader of the darker party), and many who gravitated to Flagg's ambition and deceptiveness after the epidemic.
The last part is the actual stand. A war type scenario, with Flagg and his followers on a mission to dominate the whole of America and Mother Abigails's side hoping to stop them.
Overall I think the Stand is unbelievably well-crafted in King's ability to captivate people in a story set across the such a huge country, America, telling the story through so many different characters perspectives. The character development is also insane in characters like Harold Lauder, 'Joe', and Nadine Cross- who such a complex person, who, weirdly, you end up feeling regret and sympathy for
Sorry for the rant, I just bloody love this book!
