Kind of Cruel by Sophie Hannah

2.0

I was thoroughly enjoying the book... up until about halfway. I thought all the psycho analysing of repressed memories was incredibly interesting, but the main character was starting to grate on me. She's always cynical and criticizing, and I know it's realistic, but still, it's exhausting. Too much thinking, and thinking, and pointing out of the obvious, the same way that we all do.

But for some reason, I thought the hypnosis was going to be a more important factor, like there was something hidden that only repeatedly going back could help with. But no, it was mentioned once, and then the whole story became about something else. It was hard to remember how family members related to each other, and if it was even important to do so.

And strangely, when the cops entered the story with their investigation, it only made it worse. I don't care about their sex life. And the motive for the killer seemed incredibly immature, down to the way they acted when they were caught. It was just about family, of course, I was kind of hoping it was about something incredibly darker. Even the big "mystery" of a disappearance that you keep thinking about turned out to be a fit.

I don't know, I liked it at first, the mystery of trying to solve everything; but it just turned out that the actual answers weren't as exciting as imagination.
