All the Devils by Catelyn Wilson
2.0

This is a book I have really mixed feelings about, especially since the beginning absolutely sucked me in.

Andy is attending the funeral of her sister Violet, who lost her life at the prestigious boarding school, Ravenswood Academy. Only, Andy realises the girl in the casket is not her sister. Where is Violet? And what is the school hiding?

This book absolutely had the bones of a phenomenal story, I mean, you have: dark academia, secret societies, ancient magic, the occult and gods, all wrapped up in a gothic setting. And like I say, I was hooked at the beginning but somewhere along the way, this lost me.

I’m not sure whether it was the straying from the dark academia aspect which I was enjoying so much, or the fragmented world-building. There was a serious clusterfuck of mythologies and cultures all rolled into one (which I found a bit tone deaf) as well as a jarring blend of US/UK English, where was this set again?

Overall, I enjoyed the outcome of the story and the mystery aspect of the plot, but the execution just wasn’t there.
