The Blue Umbrella by Ruskin Bond

Attitude of city dwellers about village people — everything is not for sale —- appreciation of beauty vs utility of an item — desire for something to such an extent that we forget what is right and do something that we regret —- forgiveness — ownership/ possession : how can you say that something is yours? Is a thing that you found yours? Is a thing that you bought yours? — the idea of deserving something, people say that binya is poor so she doesn’t deserve to possess the beautiful umbrella- multiple ways to express jealousy :one to appreciate the item (kids) second to say that it is not really good (adults) — honest response of kids vs dishonest / calculated response of adults— liking some thing so much that we forget about people and sometimes take a great risk (her encounter in the valley while saving the umbrella — forgiveness / giving people a second chance —- the ultimate goodness of human nature.
