The Studying Hours
by Sara Ney
2.75 stars.
It was hilarious! The banter and the sassy comebacks were funny, I was laughing and smiling while reading (not to mention, earning questioning looks from other people).
I loved the “chase” and it’s a guilty-pleasure read of mine when it comes to bad boy falls for a “good” girl, enough to get him to commit. However, I had too many issues to keep me from giving this 3 stars or higher (yes, I take the .01 onwards seriously).
1. Despite knowing that it is rare to find an awesome NA novel, this in particular annoyed me. It was “classified” as New Adult and yet, it felt shy of using lewd remarks and sexual terms (and body parts) — I’m not saying it should be too sensual, but it didn’t feel sexy at all because it didn’t feel realistic. The book had a plot for NA, but had scenes written out to pass as Young Adult.
2. The ending felt rushed, like the story had to end abruptly and I was dissatisfied.
3. I hope Deke’s reactions and actions were expounded more, I was intrigued of his attitude and I didn’t get a vivid explanation about it. I thought it had a “mystery” or plot twist, but all I get were assumptions from both Oz and James that he’s jealous.
I am unsure if I will continue with the next installments, though they’re not about Oz and James anymore, so it’s okay if I decide not to — as of the moment, I just don’t know yet.
