Trigger warning: abuse. At this point I don't remember if I first heard of Abby Jimenez in her capacity as a romance author or as the owner of Nadia Cakes. The woman can do it all. Her books have long waitlists so there was a bit of dramatic buildup before I got to read my first of her novels, and it didn't disappoint. It was eminently readable - fun to listen to, it sucked me in, and most of all, well-balanced. Jimenez paints a fair picture of Minneapolis vs. rural Minnesota, a pretty good job of hospital life, she doesn't shy away from heating up the romance but also doesn't overdo it (cough cough, Fourth Wing), and she educates about emotional and physical abuse really well, showing how it can affect anyone, even those we see as "elite" or having everything. The only critique I can think of is sometimes the characters' introspective spirals felt repetitive and longer than they needed to be, but this was so minor compared to everything Jimenez did well. 4.5/5
