Females by Andrea Long Chu

4.0

i wish that being female were the end of my problems and also the start of them too.

Long chu opens her book with the provocation that “we are all female” and makes it clear that the nomenclature has nothing to do with gender OR sex OR sexuality - it’s really the fact that we’re all equally pathetic that makes us fems. Where does this leave us? Where does it bring us? Now that we are female, should we treat one another better or regard one another with greater equity and equality? No, ALC’s book “isn’t feminism,” she tells us that straight off the bat. So what are we left with?

As other more intelligent readers have commented, the book reads like an extended running bit—not exactly a joke since the punchline isn’t clear but rather the set-up for a delayed gratification that (at least for me) comes through in snippets of autobiographical detail. Long Chu is probably one of the most stylish writers I’ve ever read, but everything feels like a wrapper, a foil. I don’t know! If you’ve read this, maybe you’re shaking your head with or at me, if so, let’s talk about it.
