Chasing Crazy by Kelly Siskind

4.0

I read an early draft of this book (courtesy of the sweet author) and it was a laugh-out-loud riot with a good dose of hot and swoony. I loved getting to know these characters, and I can't wait to see how their story changes and grows when it's a finished product!

• Quick Thoughts and Rating •

Ana: 4 stars!! This is a story that will melt your heart and tickle your funny bone! It was fun and humorous, and yet still dealt with some serious stuff. Somehow the author was able to combine it all in a seamless way that kept me glued to the pages.

Christina: 4 stars! Chasing Crazy may deal with some pretty tough subjects, but I love how Siskind kept the book almost purely light and fluffy! There was plenty to love about this novel, particularly the characters, and I haven't laughed out loud that many times in the span of 34o pages in a very long time.

• The Rest of our Flails…ummmm…opinions! •

Ana: Normally I would describe a story about two characters who've known tragedy in their past as heavy or heart wrenching. In this case, however, I'm happy to add the words fun and humorous to the list of adjectives. This is a story about two people doing the best they can to deal with the blows that life has dealt them.

The difference between this book and others is that both characters have hope and, even though it may be hidden deep inside their hearts, they're willing to take a chance because of it. They certainly don't set out to find each other...on the contrary, they're both running away from their current situations. However, they quickly recognize the possibilities life can hold once they meet. I absolutely loved watching them fall in love. Even with their doubts and their fears, they didn't give up. Sam made me swoon more than once and, of course, Nina's tragic accident-proneness (yes, I may have just made that up) had me laughing out loud. Watching each of them break out of their shells, and deal with their issues, with the encouragement of the other made my heart beat faster. This book brought all the feels...and a heartfelt sigh of joy at the end to make me happy.

Love is meant, not to change you, but to make you the best person you can be and this book laid that lesson out in the perfect way. The writing was wonderful and, overall, this was a quick, fun, heartwarming read. Can't ask for more than that!!

Christina: My section is going to be pretty quick and to the point: I'm quite fond of this novel. Pininfarina "Nina" Gabri is just as out there as her name. She's a disaster-magnet and this book is all about her owning the crazy that happens around her, even when she traveled across the world to New Zealand to try and escape it while reinventing herself simultaneously. Helping her in that quest is one-syllable Sam, a guy on his own journey to find his former self, the carefree, charismatic guy that owned the football field and everything around him before the car accident that took away his athletic career, left him visibly and emotionally scarred, and killed his mother. In this lush, vibrant setting that pulled me and enticed all my senses, I fell in love with watching this couple fall for each other. It was swoony and sexy, happening at a natural pace with a chemistry that truly sizzled the pages. Ms. Siskind did a wonderful job of creating characters, both main and secondary, that leaped off the pages and directly in to my heart. (She also introduced some ones I loved to despise, too. Thus the talent of a good writer.) With true character growth, sex scenes that set my skin aflame, and absolute hilarity that had me cackling from the very start and as I continued reading along, Chasing Crazy was a novel that I won't soon forget. Siskind found the perfect balance between angst, humor, and fluff, and I simply couldn't get enough.
