Ronaldo: The Phantom Carrot Snatcher by Maxine Sylvester

I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.
I couldn't resist when I got the opportunity to review this book, it sounded absolutely adorable and while it was totally out of season (it is summer here) I still wanted to read it. Plus, it would provide some coolness in this summer warmth (though it is a bit cooler here unlike last week, phew).
This was quite fun, it is about a small reindeer called Ronaldo who is fabulous at flying and takes tons of pleasure from doing it. He tries to be the very best. I instantly liked the little guy, especially after he takes in a very lone wolf cub named Ernie. Sure, he wasn't always happy with her presence (it definitely didn't help that the cub didn't understand to maybe stay hidden/quiet), but he tries his best to help her out and make sure she is warm and snug. Of course, not only that but also helping her out finding her family, because she is desperate to find them.
I had expected a bit more given the title, I thought this whole book would be about figuring out who was stealing all the carrots, but that one was solved superduper early on. And while the "criminal" is still around, there were no more stolen carrots or mysterious going-ons. A bit of a shame.
I loved the names of the other reindeers, they have the fairly standard reindeer names we are so used to seeing. Rudolph, Dasher, Prancer, Cupid, etc.. I also loved that despite them not getting too much time in the spotlight they still all had personalities. Now this may sound weird, but I have read plenty of books with background characters that just get a name, some basic stuff, but other than that they are just that, background characters. This one went a step further. There is even a baddie amongst the characters, a big bully. But don't worry, he will get his comeuppance. Teehee.
It was fun to see Rudi (Rudolph) and Ronaldo together, they truly are the best of friends. I had a laugh at how Ronaldo was often shaking his head at his best bud's fashion sense (then again I do agree, it is pretty terrible).
It was great how Ronaldo wasn't sure about losing, or at least sabotaging his own awesome track records with flying, decided to go for the right thing eventually.
Can I just say I found it hilarious that Ernie is cold/wears clothes, but the other wolves are just walking around naked (as I would call it given that the reindeers also wear clothes).
Of course, there is plenty more about this book. Did I mention all the carrots? Really, so many carrots. Seeing the friendship between Rudi, Ronaldo, and Ernie growing and them getting better friends with each page was delightful, the flying training was a delight and the race at the end superexciting, I loved Ronaldo's parents and how supportive they were and cheering for him at any moment, the illustrations are tons of fun and make the book even more fun to read, and the cover is also fab! I am sure kids will love this one.
All in all, I had fun reading this one and I would definitely like to read the other books in the series one day.
