Songs on Endless Repeat: Essays and Outtakes by Anthony Veasna So

4.5

SONGS ON ENDLESS REPEAT by Anthony Veasna So is a posthumous collection of fiction and nonfiction essays where So digs deep into the first gen refugee experience and its effects on our parents and our upbringing. It’s evident that So has complicated feelings with his Cambodian upbringing and the model minority myth effect in his community (as do I), but it is also palpable that he loves his community. I love the interconnected fiction pieces and the way he painted his beloved Cambodian town. His nonfiction essays are my favorite. The last essay in this collection “Baby Yeah” about his friend’s suicide is so heartbreaking and written to beautifully. Once you read it, you’ll know.
