The Emperor's Babe by Bernardine Evaristo

3.0

I thought I’d really like this but it became disappointing nearing the middle then anticlimactic end. Regardless it was engaging and the character development was interesting as Zuleika went from rags to riches so did her mindset and like most Greek hero’s her hubris was her downfall. I really enjoyed the beginning of her ‘marriage’ when the mixed in poetry felt real and raw then ambition took over, and she was no longer content and thus her end.

This was a great read and the writing, though often jarring and convoluted, was impeccable and very lyrical.
