Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship by Robert Kurson
3.0
I was excited when I first picked up this book, and I enjoyed learning about a wreck that could be a 17th century pirate ship hidden somewhere in the Dominican Republic. Joseph Bannister was an Englishman who turned to piracy, and fought the Royal Navy to avoid being captured. Bannister's ship, the Golden Fleece sank in 1686 after a vicious battle with the Royal Navy. It wasn't seen again until our pirate hunters found it and identify it.
To me, I was slowly losing interest when the book dove more into the past of the men searching for Bannister’s ship. I understand it is important to know where the men come from, to build credibility and character, so the reader can follow why certain decisions were made. Sadly though, I wanted more on of the Golden Age of Piracy and Bannister’s time. The photographs/drawings added another touch to the sunken treasure of finding a long lost pirate ship. I would love to see a documentary on the life of the Golden Fleece and its amazing Captain.
