Other Voices, Other Rooms
by Truman Capote
DID NOT FINISH
Cool premise. Too much description, not enough going on. Sure I like atmosphere and want to know about the characters’ surroundings, but I don’t need to read on every page about the beauty of swamp mosquitoes. Etc.
I do not care for “dreamlike” novels. I don’t want contrived, “artsy” prose. That might be all right in a very short story where I can maybe find meaning in the writing style and it doesn’t go on long enough for me to get bored, but not in a full-length book. I want to feel as though I’m in the story; I want to feel connected to the characters. Not like I’m wandering around in a haze.
Decided to read what happens at the end, and it’s dumb. Maybe it was shocking in the 1940s when it was first published, but I found it a laughable letdown given the mystery tease that came before.
Maybe In Cold Blood is better?
