Ophelia
by Lisa M. Klein
I read this before I read Hamlet in school, which meant that Lisa Klein's portrayal of Hamlet, Ophelia, and the major characters influenced my understanding of Shakespeare's Hamlet. For example, rather than placing Ophelia as a minor character, I placed her second only to Hamlet. I also saw Ophelia as a character beyond her romance with Hamlet since this book gives her a background and shows that she is a person, not just a love interest.
The influence of Klein's perspective of Hamlet after years shows how strong and believable her writing and characters are, even when in a retelling.
This book deserves 4 stars since it gives a new perspective of Hamlet and Ophelia and their romance while still staying within the historical and literary reality of Hamlet.
