The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons
4.0

"That's true if you believe it, but make no mistake - it is only true because you believe it."

I really enjoyed this book, I loved the fantastical elements and the magic and the world, but BUT....it was difficult to follow at times. I sometimes found myself rereading passages because I was confused about what was going on. It was simpler at first, but when I got about halfway and onward it started to get confusing.

Lyons I think did an okay job about explaining the world and how things worked. I followed everything enough to where I could follow what was going on and what the characters were talking about, most of the time. But by the end of it I was just going with the flow of it. The story was so dense I think it could be one of those where you need to read it multiple times.

I thought the world as well was very raw and dark; murder, politics, slavery, and class were major areas of this story. The reason it took me almost a month to finish it was because there were times it was so dark and shocking I needed a minute away from it, and not to mention that I was a bit confused at times. Again, I really liked where this story was going, and I plan to continue with the series, but this I feel is a very raw fantasy story.

All in all, while Lyons tried to explain what was going on within the story, the effort was choppy and not very elegant. If it wasn't then I would not be continuing with the series since a huge pet peeve of mine with books is when authors don't explain what the world is like, mostly this happens with high fantasy and science fiction novels, and I can't follow what the characters are doing or why. If I can't understand the world I will very quickly loose interest. I liked the characters in this book, especially Kihrin, and I am very curious as to what happens now.

I am hopeful with this series, and I just hope that it is not misplaced.
