When the blurb says its for fans of Erin Morganstein, it's right. It's a whimsical adventure in a similar vein to the Night Circus. Unlike the Night Circus, I did not feel as connected to the leads. And the ending, I could have done without the last couple of sentences.
I would have like to have known more about both uncles, more about Violets life growing up to give her finding out the secret to give more impact. As it was it felt like there was little connection between the 3 of them, more like a child minder than loving relatives. And how did they handle schooling, and everything that normally goes into raising a child. So many questions, which left an unsatisfied taste in my mouth.
Saying all that, it was beautifully written and the plot itself good, a twist to the chosen one trope which didn't show all characters at their best.
