It is such a challenge with history to fit individual lives in with the big picture. The Civil Rights Movement has become so much more meaningful and real to me as I have read biographies and books focusing on single people or single events. However, it is only with an understanding of the big picture that the biographies can be as touching as they are. To read that Anderson sang "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, where MLK, Jr. would give his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, and where I have recently read about John Lewis speaking as well, brought me to tears.
This is a beautiful, accessible story about a woman who wanted to sing. She did not intend to become a member of the Civil Rights Movement, but being who she was, in the time that she was living, left her the options of fighting or giving up. She chose to fight, but did so with dignity and grace.
