The Last Concubine by Lesley Downer

2.0

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Last Concubine, it just wasn't what I expected. I was thinking it would be more along the lines of a story about love lost and found, and it was mostly about the relationships between the hierarchies of Japanese aristocrats.

However, the thing I enjoyed most about this book was that it is so richly detailed about an important and turbulent time in Japanese history. This is what made reading the book enjoyable. I know a lot of it was made up, but I was able to learn more about the history and culture of another country through what was portrayed here.
