i remember reading the first book in the Birthmarked series way back in early 2015, and eagerly buying the second before i was even halfway done with the first. i devoured those two books but i never did get around to buying or reading the third. that didn’t stop me from holding this series in such high esteem however.
finally, nearly four years later, i forced myself to re-read the first book. i had to know if it stood the test of time or if my cringey past self had fell head over heels in love for a tacky ya-dystopian-romance novel. having read many more incredible books in the past years, to say i was apprehensive about how my feelings towards this series may have changed is an understatement.
surprisingly however, i came to realise that the birthmarked trilogy is honestly so good imo?? i’m in love with leon and gaia is an incredible breath of fresh air as far as protagonists go. not only is she stubborn to a fault but her physical burn really does make for an interesting backstory while (thankfully) taking away the opportunity for her character to become one of those “oh i’m so ugly but i have long flowing blonde hair and my eyes are crystal pools of cascading waters but everyone hates me because i’m so bland and also i’ve never had a breakout in my entire life my skin is utterly flawless”
i just really love this series and i was so afraid it was going to be a shit-show but no!!! it’s great and i love it (even if it can be a bit soppy at times)!!!
also: ??? malachi dying ???
