I think the thing that guided my rating most for this book is that many scenes filled me with dread about what was about to happen. Like Jack, I watched in fear, knowing what was about to happen, but powerless to stop it. Even though scenes like those didn't surprise me, they still filled me with anticipation about what was happening. Like a car crash, you can't look away, even though you know what you're about to see might just upset you. That, to me, makes a solid horror novel.

The pace is slow, as is often the case with possession stories--the journey is what we're here for, not the destination, as the lives of our protagonists fall apart around them and we wait to see if they will overcome evil.
