Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries by Kory Stamper

5.0

A funny, captivating and insightful book. Highly recommend to anyone interested in the English language.

There are things around us that we don't think too much about. We don't question how they came into existence. We use them when we need them and move on. Dictionaries are one of those things. Granted, I have never held a dictionary in my hands but I have looked up words online a number of times. But, I never questioned how dictionaries are compiled, who compiles them, who defines the words that make up a dictionary and how they define the words.

The author does an amazing job at introducing a whole new field to the readers and keeps them captivated throughout the book. The book is very approachable. There are a number of words that will have you reach for a dictionary but you can mostly glean the meaning given the context.

All in all, I had an awesome experience reading the book. I can't wait to read it again in a few months.
