City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

Strange. Starts out very tediously not really connecting with the stilted protagonist. Tries the "letter to mysterious person" structure, but doesn't fill in any details of the relationship to make you wonder about it, only annoyingly repeats "Angela" again and again in the midst of the story like a microwave whose door still hasn't been opened.

Finally gets going in the middle and tells a somewhat interesting story set in the life of the theater... Some truly insightful psychology in the twists of that journey. Sadly, doesn't continue in this vein though, extending the plot so far beyond the natural denouement that it feels like the series of post scripts kids write to each other- every new chapter feeling like P. P. P. S., P. P. P. P. S., P. P. P. P. P. S. Honestly wished for it to end a dozen times after the main story.

Oddly, reads like a memoir, which may make sense given the author's writing experience, but doesn't work as a novel because we don't know who the subject is and have no drive to find out the litany of details that make up her life. A story more told than shown, even in the more colorful parts.
